Dictation helps students connect sounds to their corresponding written forms. As students hear a word and write it, they practice encoding- translating sounds into letters- which reinforces their understanding of how spoken language is represented in writing.  Word Sorts are a hands-on activity used to help students explore, analyze, and categorize words based on specific patterns, sounds, or meanings. Rather than giving students sorts "at their level", consider focusing on grade level phonics skills. When thinking about word sorts, don't focus on activities that can be done without actually reading the words. Focus on direct instruction of the skill before moving to exploration. Picture sorts are a great way to make sure students are internalizing the patterns and not just matching letters.
  • Connect Sounds to Written Forms through Dictation: Participants will practice encoding by hearing words and writing them, reinforcing their understanding of how spoken language is represented in writing.
  • Explore and Categorize Words with Word Sorts: Participants will engage in hands-on activities to explore, analyze, and categorize words based on specific patterns, sounds, or meanings.
