GRADE 1 - Building Strong Foundations: Strategies for Strengthening Background Knowledge
This professional learning session will focus on strategies that educators can use to build background knowledge, a critical strand in Scarborough's Reading Rope, which supports reading comprehension and language proficiency. Teachers will learn how background knowledge helps students make connections to new content, enabling them to decode and understand more complex texts. Participants will explore practical, research-based strategies for activating prior knowledge, making content relevant, and bridging gaps for diverse learners. Through hands-on activities and discussions, teachers will gain tools for integrating background knowledge-building techniques into daily instruction to support students' reading development, comprehension, and overall growth. By the end of the session, educators will have a clear understanding of how to strengthen this essential strand of the Reading Rope to foster student success in literacy.

We are learning how building background knowledge supports the language and cognitive skills that contribute to reading comprehension so that all students, especially English learners can link prior knowledge to new learning.

GRADE 1 - Dictation/Word Sorts
Dictation helps students connect sounds to their corresponding written forms. As students hear a word and write it, they practice encoding- translating sounds into letters- which reinforces their understanding of how spoken language is represented in writing.  Word Sorts are a hands-on activity used to help students explore, analyze, and categorize words based on specific patterns, sounds, or meanings. Rather than giving students sorts "at their level", consider focusing on grade level phonics skills. When thinking about word sorts, don't focus on activities that can be done without actually reading the words. Focus on direct instruction of the skill before moving to exploration. Picture sorts are a great way to make sure students are internalizing the patterns and not just matching letters.
  • Connect Sounds to Written Forms through Dictation: Participants will practice encoding by hearing words and writing them, reinforcing their understanding of how spoken language is represented in writing.
  • Explore and Categorize Words with Word Sorts: Participants will engage in hands-on activities to explore, analyze, and categorize words based on specific patterns, sounds, or meanings.

GRADE 1 - Heart Words/Word Chaining
Heart words are high-frequency words that are irregular and don't follow standard spelling rules. We use this strategy to help students remember high-frequency words that aren't decodable. These words need to be explicitly taught by placing a little heart above the part of the word that they need to learn 'by heart'.  When students engage in word chain activities, the focus is on changing one sound and grapheme to form a new word, then changing one sound and grapheme to form the next word, and so on. Phoneme manipulation in word chaining requires students to utilize their understanding of segmentation, blending, the position of sound within the word, and the ability to isolate and change the sound to create a new word.

GRADE 1 - Tapping Phonemes/Elkonin Boxes/Sound Walls
Orthographic mapping is the cognitive process that we use to store and retrieve words by connecting their pronunciation, spelling, and meaning automatically. We can practice this skill by tapping phonemes and using Elkonin boxes.  A sound wall arranges words by sounds, not by the alphabet, and matches phonemes with graphemes. They have images of students' mouths articulating the phonemes. Students can make the connection between what the phoneme sounds like and what their mouth should be doing as they say the phoneme.
  • Practice Phoneme Tapping: Participants will practice tapping phonemes to reinforce their understanding of the sounds within words.
  • Use Elkonin Boxes: Participants will use Elkonin boxes to visually segment words into individual phonemes, aiding in the orthographic mapping process.
  • Engage with a Sound Wall: Participants will interact with a sound wall that arranges words by sounds and matches phonemes with graphemes.

KINDER & FIRST GRADE - The Shifting Landscape of Literacy: The Journey to the Science of Reading LIMITED
Literacy is the cornerstone of education, unlocking countless opportunities and shaping the trajectory of a child's life. Science of Reading aligned classroom instruction helps emerging, developing, and striving readers develop skills critical for reading success.  This session will provide insightful exploration examining the theoretical models that serve as the foundation for understanding the intricate process of learning to read. An in-depth analysis of the underpinnings of the science will highlight the crucial elements required for effective literacy development in the {insert grade band} classroom. Participants will dig more deeply into the strands of literacy to uncover the connected principles of the tenets of the Science of Reading. This session is designed to examine the principles and components of evidence-based reading instruction and align them with targeted approaches to support students as they discover the many layers of language necessary to become confident and successful readers.

Navigating these changes in curriculum, instruction, and assessment can be challenging for the most seasoned educators. This session will also focus on strategies to form a community of trust to lift this work, ensuring that all stakeholders involved feel valued and included. We will explore systems thinking and communication tactics to unify and consolidate efforts to support the recalibration of reading instruction.
